Why We Trust the OSDI
At Diane M. Hilal-Campo, MD, our commitment to compassionate, personalized care includes using tools that are proven and reliable. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) is a scientifically validated questionnaire used worldwide to measure symptom severity and impact on daily life.
- Accurate & consistent: Validation studies show OSDI reliably distinguishes mild, moderate, and severe dry eye and produces repeatable scores when symptoms are unchanged.
- Recommended by experts: Global organizations (e.g., TFOS) include OSDI in dry eye guidelines and clinical research.
- Tracks meaningful change: Clinicians use OSDI over time to confirm when treatment is truly helping.

A Deeper Look at Your OSDI Score
Your personal symptom experience matters. The OSDI’s 12 questions convert your last-week symptoms into a 0–100 score we can track over time.
- What it evaluates: Ocular symptoms (gritty, sore, light sensitivity), vision-related function (reading, night driving, screens, TV), and environmental triggers (wind, low humidity, A/C).
- How it’s calculated: (Sum of answered items × 25) ÷ number of answered items.
- Interpretation: 0–12 normal, 13–22 mild, 23–32 moderate, 33–100 severe.
Your score helps personalize care and measure progress with treatment.
