When to Seek Emergency Eye Care

Recognizing the signs of an eye emergency can make the difference between preserving vision and permanent vision loss. Call our office immediately if you experience any of the following.

If vision suddenly darkens, becomes cloudy, or part of your visual field disappears, this could indicate a retinal or optic nerve problem requiring immediate attention.

Blunt trauma, cuts, or foreign objects in the eye should always be examined promptly to prevent complications.

These symptoms may signal a retinal tear or detachment, conditions that need urgent diagnosis and treatment.

Sudden pain with redness or nausea can be a sign of acute glaucoma or severe infection and must be treated urgently.

Chemical exposure or embedded debris can begin causing permanent damage within minutes. Immediate rinsing followed by ophthalmic care is critical.

Thick discharge, swelling, or fever with eye redness can point to a dangerous infection that requires urgent care.

Double vision or headaches with sudden visual changes may indicate neurological or vascular conditions that need immediate evaluation.

First Aid Steps Before You Arrive

First Aid Steps Before You Arrive

Taking proper steps while on the way to the office can help protect your eye and limit damage.

Rinse the eye immediately with clean water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses during rinsing if possible, and call our office for instructions while flushing.

Do not remove any object stuck in or around the eye. Lightly cover with a shield or cup without pressure and seek immediate care.

Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If vision changes, bleeding in the eye, or pain occur, call us right away.

If rinsing does not remove the object, avoid rubbing the eye. Keep it closed and covered until examined.

If our office is closed and your symptoms are severe, go to the nearest emergency room. Dr. Hilal-Campo has surgical privileges at Valley Hospital and coordinates follow-up care.
